Holiday Dog

Dorene O’Brien, author of VOICES OF THE LOST AND FOUND, showed up in Northport on Friday with husband Pat, daughter Hadley, and four-month-old yellow Lab puppy Chloe, all come to enjoy a long holiday weekend. When they bemoaned Chloe’s lack of bandana, I liberated Nikki’s old holiday scarf from the picture frame on the counter (it had been tied around her portrait) and insisted that it now be Chloe’s. “Are you sure?” they kept asking. But of course! Nikki wouldn’t mind at all, and see how cute Chloe looks in it! I’m sure Chloe and her family enjoyed the beautiful blizzard that arrived later in the afternoon, too. After a convivial stop at Fischer’s Happy Hour Tavern, we were glad to get home to our reading chairs by the fireplace.

Tonight, continuing with UNBOWED, I'll be referring to maps in Fodor's.

Chloe loves her bandanna! In fact, I took if off when she went to bed that night and the next morning she was walking around with it in her mouth so we put it back on immediately. We had a wonderful visit and took advantage of the snowstorm with some gonzo sledding on Braman Hill. Chloe raced the sledders and then jumped on them for good measure when they reached the bottom of the hill! We loved seeing the Open sign in the bookstore window when we drove into town and seeing you, calm and gracious in the holiday frenzy.

It was wonderful having you visit, I loved seeing all of you and meeting Chloe, and I'm so pleased that she actually likes her bandanna! When we got home about 1 a.m., I finished reading GINNIE AND GENEVA, a girls' book I'd started before we went to our friends' cabin. The two girls decide to take up hiking as their hobby, and Geneva's father takes them for a winter hike, with breakfast at sunrise. I thought how perfect a breakfast picnic at Braman Hill would be--don't you think so?
