Another Day of High Winds

Wednesday was another day of strong winds, another day for freighters on northern Lake Michigan to seek the shelter of the Manitou Passage.

From time to time the sun broke through the clouds, lighting beaches on the offshore islands. Here you're looking northwest toward South Fox Island.

Wind in the corn, wind shaking the cherry boughs, wind whipping up whitecaps on Lake Michigan. I'm hoping the wind will have calmed down by tomorrow. The Mackinac Bridge is exciting enough without high winds!

I couldn't do the Mackinaw Bridge with the winds like they are now. Hope it's calm for you! Love to see the lake when it's riled up though. Heck. Love to see the lake.

I'll report early next week, but morning looks gorgeous today, and we shall see what we shall see. Tally-ho!

I missed saying Bon, er, Voyage. Hope you have a most wonderful time in the UP. Hope you got there. Hate to think of you camping out in Mackinaw City waiting for the wind to die down.

I wish freighters would occasionally shelter in the East Bay, but I think it's not practical. I like seeing them; it's one of the fine features of living in Detroit.

Have the winds died down yet, Pamela? They have here, finally. I love your image of the winds shaking the cherry boughs. You know we don't have cherries this far north. The winds moan through the pines, instead.

Water seems to bring out the best and worst in the wind. I can just imagine how wild that bridge must be when it's windy. It was warm and sunny both times I crossed it on family trips to the US when I was a child.

Gerry, we saw freighters in the Straits and in Lake Michigan from the "top" (i.e., along U.S. 2) on our drive home day, Monday. Kathy, although there are no cherry orchards in or near Grand Marais on Lake Superior, the many old apple orchards are a welcoming feature of the countryside. Amy-Lynn, we had a sunny crossing today, though windy, but it is ALWAYS exciting! I feel like a kid again every time I cross the Bridge. Short report is that we had one day of rain (very restful!) and splendid sunshine the rest of the time. Photos and detail to follow....
