Up North Getaway, First Day

Here it is--the north end of the Mackinac Bridge, our entry into the Upper Peninsula and a few well-earned vacation days.

Does it look like a lot of "nothing"? That's what I love about it. No blah-blah-blah at all, just trees and bogs and little rivers and big sky.

Here's our home away from home, the Superior Hotel in Grand Marais. The plants in Bess Capogrossa's front window add to the homey look and feel of the place.

These little roses always seem to me like the emblem of Grand Marais.

Even on a cloudy morning, a Grand Marais sunrise is beautiful. For vacation we trade our home lake, Lake Michigan, for our home-away-from home lake, Lake Superior.

More vacation photos to come, including Sarah's birthday. Also, bookstore and book news from Up Up North.

Is there anything that delights the soul of a northern mitten Michiganian like a trip to the U.P.? I think not. I dearly love Seney, and Grand Marais, and the whole vast sweep of North all the way across to Wisconsin and into it!

Glad you're having a great time. Wish we were there.

Actually, Gerry, we're already home, but we did have a great time, and now, today, Leelanau County is every bit as beautiful as anything we saw in the U.P. Aren't we all just lucky ducks to live in Michigan?

Dawn, ME, TOO!!! I never get tired of drinking it all in through my eyes and nose and skin.
