Here Comes the (December) Sun!

Yes, and we got out today, too, but first, before going on about today, let's go back and visit a few images from yesterday, Snowbound Day #3. See (below) how tricky blowing snow can be: some parts of the ground are windswept and bare, while others are buried under three-foot drifts. What’s true of the yard gives an idea of what happens to the driveway, where we have trouble appreciating the beauty of drifted snow.

Here's a scary picture to let you see how we prepared to go out in freezing temperatures and high winds.

But now, the good news! Today we got out! The day began in promising fashion, with a noticeable lack of wind and an offer of an early ride to town for me. I took Sarah out to run before hiking up the driveway. Later on David, my hero, managed to get our car unstuck and arranged for someone to come clear the drifted and piled-up snow where the car had been. All very exciting!

So I am back in my bookstore today, with sunlight streaming in the front windows, and other exciting news is that two authors who have recently visited Dog Ears Books were awarded the Michigan Notable Book prize for 2009. One is Mardi Link for Isadore’s Secret, which I wrote about here in “Books on Northport” earlier in the season, and the other is Don Lystra for Season of Water and Ice, his first novel, which he thinks I was the first to review. I am very excited for these two very deserving writers. Naturally, signed copies of these two books, as well as others, are featured this month at Dog Ears Books.

I’m hoping a week from tomorrow the weather will be good for my Last-Minute Shoppers and All Friends Open House. No need to wait a week, though. If you’re driving or walking down Waukazoo Street when the bookstore is open, come on in!

And if you’ve got sun like we’ve got sun today, enjoy it!

Glad you made it out today! We had sun and no wind as well. Sun is a wonderful thing. No wind is a blessing!

We had sun over here today, too - and even tonight it was positively balmy when I came home.

Clearly you have a discerning eye, madam. Your book guidance is invaluable. If the sunshine holds I may have to make a trip to Northport.

The first photo is beautiful. I love to see the sun winking from behind trees.

It was a happy, happy day. I was happy to be back in my bookstore, with sun pouring in the front windows all morning and the tree lights twinkling brighter at the end of the day and all the friends and customers who dropped in to visit and shop cheering my heart--my heart which leapt at the morning sun "winking from behind the trees" and was warmed by the sight of a small outdoor fire welcoming us to a neighborhood party as night came on.

It's good to see a picture of the outside of your little bookstore. It looks so charming. As does your tree. Glad you were able to get out of the house finally. What a long snowed-in stint you had! Bet it feels so good to move about now.

It is heaven to be home and heaven to be able to get out! Today we came home to find our neighbor stuck right where we'd been stuck for three days. Had to pull her out with a cable before we could get in because there was no room to get around. It's a challenging season. But the bookstore was very busy this morning, and that did my heart good, too. David and I left Bruce in charge about 2 o'clock, but I'll be there to open in the morning. Back orders arrived today! Such excitement!
