They called themselves and were called les fauves. So when I reached dissertation stage in my Ph.D. program and decided I might just as well procrastinate in Michigan as in Illinois (dissertation stage is where it’s so easy to stall out, because you’re teaching then and always have lectures to prepare and office hours to keep and papers to grade — anything but your own work), and a friend was going back to England to work there, it was her idea that she and I would be les philosophes fauves. Catchy, eh?

I’m proud of you for reading a French novel. I tried with a Spanish novel another friend sent me, but I’m nowhere near that level of reading ability. French, yes. So I guess if I can hold onto that for the rest of my life, I’ll be doing okay.

It was a fun surprise to find your comment here!P. J. I love the comparisons of Michigan and Arizona blues, and the two cardinals are a study in how nature alters itself, seeing the browns in the Arizona cardinal version. In Mass. we had many New England birds in our back yard, and we loved seeing all the colors, especially the male cardinal. In Brooklyn, we go to the parks, but the birds are less visible, and I do miss those cardinals. Oh! You’ve inspired me to buy my first French book in years (Merci !), and I’m plowing through M. Duras’s Moderato Cantabile. When you mentioned that you are a philosophe fauve (I can’t italicize here), I am happy to annouce that you are a Wildcat Philosopher! HeeHee, so you are somewhat unauthorized and speculative, but isn’t that what philosophers are and what they do? Oh well, my Wildcat friend, please keep all your comments, quotes (I love John H. Van Dyke), and photos coming to us all. Jeanienoreply@blogger.com
