Vegetable Light
Can you identify this brilliant yellow burst of fire against the quiet fall landscape? It reminds me of Barbara Kingsolver's ANIMAL, VEGETABLE, MIRACLE.
Not sure what that yellow stuff is, but I enjoyed Kingsolver's book on eating locally, and growing or making whatever you can, including cheese. Another great read on local eating is PLENTY by Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon, a young Vancover, B.C. couple. I'd say their book is faster and more fun, but no less inspiring.
Susan, let's wait and see if someone else guesses the plant's identity. (My title is a hint.) Thanks for the tip on another good book. And speaking of tips, I'll make explicit what you hinted at and say, "Leelanau Cheese!!!"
I don't know the plant (asparagus?--I've never seen it growing wild), but the photo looks like a great painting I know (titled, I think, "The End of My Days", familiarly known as "Fred's Enticement").
